I reject the "right to exist" of all states. Hope that clears things up.

  2. I hate Johnson, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this turns out to be empty. But bringing forward the phaseout of petrol and diesel cars is a big deal, the right thing to do, and deserves credit.

I’m glad to see everyone tweeting the one Gallup poll of Trump’s approval rating rather than relying on a boring average.

  6. If this had happened in Alabama on Super Tuesday, for instance, it would be a minor footnote.

It's not an Iowa thing, it's a generic elections thing that happens sometimes, and no-one would care if there wasn't such a hyperfocus on Iowa.

There's a weird disconnect in the way the post-Iowa conspiracy theories are being covered. It's true that Bernie supporters on Twitter are behaving badly. But the Sanders campaign itself has been extremely careful, in distinct contrast to teams Biden and Buttigieg.

Valid point. If we get to Super Tuesday and say, Alabama can't report results until a day later, likely no-one will care too much.

The only real shiftings of national polling positions among the major candidates over all of 2019 have been: 1) Beto's dramatic collapse as soon as he entered the race 2) Harris' blink-and-you'll-miss-it surge after Debate 1 3) Warren's more gradual rise and fall over the Autumn

Buttigieg, despite early state strength, never really broke out of 5-10% in national polls.

This may well be the case. Apart from Warren's brief poll surge that later subsided, the national polling has been pretty consistent - Biden first with ~26-31%, Bernie 2nd with ~17-22%.

The modern situation where everyone knows how primaries work and everyone hyper-obsesses on IA and NH is completely different to what things were like in 1976.

ii) 1976 was basically the first real primary campaign, Iowa going first was a coincidence that no-one besides Carter, including the media, considered significant. Carter won because he figured out the knack of primary campaigning when no-one else knew what they were doing.

Apart from Obama, the other commonly cited beneficiary of Iowa momentum was Carter in 1976. However, there are two important caveats here: i) Carter didn't actually win, "Uncommitted" did - Carter was just the single candidate to get the most.

Worth noting that the ultimate significance of Iowa is often overstated. With the exception of Obama 2008 and maybe Kerry 2004, pretty much every Iowa winner in both parties was either a) already the clear frontrunner or b) ended up clearly losing the nomination anyway.

Simple Q: will other anchors from non Fox networks show up? If so, they should be named/shamed. Yesterday the UK political press did a walkout after Boris Johnson excluded centre-left journalists from a press briefing. Why can’t American journalists show the same solidarity?

The Dems taking a day or so to get Iowa results is clunky and embarrassing, but not a crisis of democracy, and not a conspiracy against your candidate. Folks really need to calm down.
