If you made it this far, curious to hear some feedback on this. Is there anyone out there doing this? If so, who? Would the model not work? Why? Or if you're interested in doing something like this or want a funding source like this, DM me :)

Authors do seem to complain about publishers so there's probably room for improvement but perhaps the grass is always greener on the other side? After all, you can easily self-publish a book on Amazon today but you don't see many doing that, which leads to the question of why?

It's also not meant for everyone. There are a lot of people who would like to return billions, hundreds of millions, etc, but not every idea should be venture funded. I think people are starting to understand this better. The funding models are still catching up.

I know there are a lot of things out there that do bits and pieces of this (crowdfunding, venture funding, etc) but as far as I know no one really does it all for software developers quite like book publishers do for authors.

The rest of the model would also be similar to book publishers, ie. the publisher would help with the marketing etc but share in the royalties from sales.

So that's why I think a book publishing like model could work. Developer creates a plan (a prototype?) that serves as their "manifest". Publishers (or whatever you call them) can decide to fund the developer or not by giving a small stipend up front to fund initial development.

Finally there's also the crowdfunding route. But crowdfunding doesn't always work well for unknowns or ideas that are out there. Often you need people to take a risk on something work, crowdfunding doesn't seem to reward risk taking, it's more a initial sales platform

Another avenue is to bootstrap it where you try to create something on the side or with your own money. But this isn't always possible for everyone. It would be easier to get some sort of stipend at the start, then share in the profits later

There are some traditional VCs/Angels starting to look at funding smaller companies (ie & ) but from my understanding, they still are pretty much equity models for companies. Not a bad thing, but doesn't address solo developer projects

One of the big challenges as an independent developer is figuring out how to fund yourself and your idea. One of the most popular options today is taking on seed funding from VC/Angel investors, but their business model is to have large exists

Looking for some feedback on an idea: would it be valuable to have "software publishers"? Similar to book publishers, who fund authors and share the rewards via future royalties. Could that model work for software developers? Is there room for another funding model?

I love this quote from Thinking in Bets by about how to think about opportunity cost and who's really on the 'other side of the table' for most of our decisions: "We are betting against all the future versions of ourselves that we are not choosing."

Something I am starting to appreciate more and more: social and cultural norms are vastly underrated as compared to economic and market norms in today’s society; especially amongst the elite (academics, politicians, business leaders, etc)
