New: A divided inner circle. A fateful misread of S.C. and Super Tuesday. A candidate who would not broaden his message or reach out beyond his powerful faction. Bernie Sanders had the nomination within his grasp – @jmartNYT & me on how it slipped away 👇https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …

The Sanders team was divided over many important decisions, but most of all on how to handle Biden. One faction constantly pleaded with Sanders to go on offense. Others saw it as a futile exercise – Bernie & Jane liked the Bidens and their word was final.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …

Sanders's pollster outlined this (prescient!) scenario in mid-January, in the latest of many appeals he made for Bernie to go on the attack. But there was no consensus about what to do next, and Sanders never made the inroads he needed with black voters.pic.twitter.com/VeDnbdMRNq

As Sanders rose to the top, a wide range of allies urged him to modulate his message and make overtures to the middle of the party. How wide a range? Well, it included @AOC @johncusack and @PeterWelch But Sanders didn't adjust coursehttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …

There was frustration at the highest levels of the campaign with a group of aides and allies who lobbied relentlessly for Sanders to nuke Biden, well past the point that the candidate had made it clear he did not want to do so. One major clash came in late January ...pic.twitter.com/eVnpziTu42

          A word people used repeatedly, describing Sanders's post-Nevada decision-making, was hubris https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …pic.twitter.com/w8YkQ6lmg3

Florida Dems reached out to Sanders just before the NV caucuses to propose opening a dialog – about all the "revolution" and "socialism" stuff that doesn't play great there Sanders's campaign was initially receptive. Then came the @60Minutes interview ...https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …

There's a lot in here – I hope you'll spend some time with the story this weekend, even with so much else going on Sanders got so, so close. But even at the peak of his strength, there were deep flaws in his candidacy that helped his rivals overpower him.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/21/us/politics/bernie-sanders-democrats-2020.html …

when they went negative, his campaign collapsed - ordinary voters saw what we have seen on twitter.
