Imagine the zoologist said, "No, pandas are a true species of bear." Should I then say, "Well, my 5th grade biology textbook said..."

The thinking of biologists with regards to the taxonomy of panda bears has changed since my 5th grade textbook was written, go figure.

Now you're thinking maybe "Okay so people were wrong back then but taxonomy is science and it's objective, not like gender." Hahahahahaha.

Taxonomy is an *attempt* at objectivity, but it is ultimately a construct. A lot of it is supposition, inference, and judgment calls.

You probably learned in middle school biology that the precise definition of species depends on a population being able to breed.

So like, for instance, horses and donkeys are different species. So they can't breathe. Except guess where we get mules from?

So your middle school definition needs an ad hoc addition: "And the offspring will be fertile."

Except, oh boy, guess what? Some mules are fertile.

Mules aren't fertile often enough for it to be very likely you'd get a stable, sustainable breeding population arising naturally, no.

But if you try to nail down a precise definition of "species" that accounts for this... well, some endangered species become unclassifiable.

It's the Sandwich Problem, babies. (Everything is the Sandwich Problem.) You can't nail down a definition because words don't work like that

The dictionary definition is a fine overview, your fifth grade textbook is a good working definition for a fifth grader.

But at the end of the day, the concept represented by species is bigger and more complicated than the definitions attached to it can be.
