This displays an incredible level of both hubris and ignorance, each of which is so intertwined with the other that it's hard to tell where one begins and the other ends.https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/jul/10/elon-musk-queries-expertise-of-thai-cave-rescue-officials?CMP=share_btn_tw …

Let's start with the supposition that Musk's waterproof rescue coffin could actually technically have gone everywhere it needed to go, in order to get the children in and out. Let us for the sake of charity grant his assertion that this is true.

The water the divers were moving through was not merely dark -- a lack of light is a solved problem! It was opaque, because of cave sediment. Which means divers had to go by feel.

Look at Musk's metal capitalism penis and try to imagine being one of a pair of divers trying to maneuver it through a very narrow, irregular gap that *technically* can accommodate it, by feel. With a weak and panicky child inside.

Imagine that you had no time to prepare for this, and you had spent days training and testing and preparing and making sure the kids were ready to make the journey without the submersible.

And now, because Captain Ego on the other side of the world wants to make a grand gesture, you've got to abandon the plan already in progress and guide the world's worst watercraft through tight corners and treacherous currents.

What's Musk's plan for if currents pin his useless metal tube against a diver's limb? What's the plan for if winds up injuring one of them? What's the plan for if it springs a leak?

His miracle of innovation doesn't actually make the task simpler, but more complicated. Thing about how much longer each trip would be, in *and* out, if it worked. Because they have to lug the thing in with them each time. One diver already ran out of air in the preliminaries.

Ultimately Musk was playing games with lives. He offered nothing; he *demanded* a field test of a highly experimental device be made with thirteen lives on the line, and is now growing petulatant that he was denied it.

And his fanboys are quick to say he consulted with the Thai government and rescuers on the scene. Which is to say: he took time and attention away from the rescue to bug them, because no one dared to blow the American billionaire off completely.

The kind of stunt he was proposing would never have been considered if there were a dozen white US kids stranded and a plan already in motion to save them, and I doubt he would have bother proposing it. He thought he saw an opportunity.

If the officials on the ground had given in, he would have had a unique chance to stress test his designs in a real scenario with the highest stakes. No regulations, no oversight, and by setting the baseline for success at zero he can call himself a hero anyway.

If they'd died, he could say "Wow, not even my Aperture Science Free-Floating Life Preservation Chamber was enough to save them. Imagine how much worse it would have been without it."

I am beyond disgusted by this. He wanted those kids for test subjects.
