    Many of the most useful benefits to adopting Bayesian inference come from bespoke modeling that doesn’t depend on asymptotics to be valid. Ironically this is possible because Bayes is _easier_ to implement than frequentist methods.

    One of the reasons that I think and other frameworks are useful is because they force you to think about your model really hard -- every step of the way is defined by yourself. Even if you're not a Bayesian, an equivalent framework for frequentist would go a long way.

    Re study of police shootings, scroll up for full flavor. Another example of social science using “control” like a magic verb that manufactures truth. If only there were an axiomatic framework for deciding causal queries...

    Johnson and Cesario have stated their analysis is still informative because it controls for county crime rates by race and other shooting attributes. But as Bayes’ rule shows, the addition of these control variables, X, does not solve the fundamental conceptual problem. 11/n

    What a wonderful opportunity to talk about experimental design and the subtleties of what overfitting means in a Bayesian context! A "I've been consulting all day and my brain is too tired to do real work" thread.

    Overfitting affects all inference problems in economics because it arises when the true data-generating process is too complex for you to feasibly capture given the data and the tools that you have, and this is always the case in social science.

    It's the 2nd printing of the 2nd edition, so it's basically the squared version of Osvaldo's book 🎉 And at its root (pun intended), it's a great book that I advise any beginner in stats to read! 📖

    It was a bit delayed but the second printing is finally available. ebooks from Packt and other vendors should be automatically updated.
