This intersection one block north of the White House is entirely frozen. I’m witnessing a climate-themed, impromptu block party with masked “polar bears.” A few dozen police gathering nearby. #ShutDownDCpic.twitter.com/rZNoWZ78Yp

Police are slowly moving in on the sailboat. They’re clearing the middle of the intersection, at least a dozen people staying put. I see a few officers having a chat with the “sailors” on deck.

Some of these protesters are actually bound to each other inside these metal tubes linked to the sailboat. Seems like they’re in it for the long haul.

Police are using a saw to separate the links protesters have attached themselves to the boat with. They’ve given those people flame-resistant blankets for the sparks. And ear protection.

Over an hour later and police are still working to cut loose two more protesters at K and 16th. Traffic is being rerouted around this block, leaving it devoid of anyone except protesters, police, curious onlookers and one colorful sailboat.

Boat update: The sit-in at K and 16th is over. None of the protesters cut loose were arrested. Police are about to tow this thing out. I’m hearing radio chatter on a blockade at Dupont Circle. Think I’ll run over for a look.

Two people have chained themselves to ladders at the intersection of Mass Ave and 18th. “Earth is on fire, the Amazon is on fire,” one yells, to an audience of workers peering out from Dupont Circle offices.

The Extinction Rebellion outpost at Mass and 18th has doubled in size with the arrival of about 50 people carrying a “tell the truth” banner. The blockades are slowly lifting but a few groups have chosen to go mobile.

Same group marching south on Connecticut with a police escort containing traffic impacts. With the blockades over, they’re rendezvousing with others in Farragut Square to discuss next steps over ice cream. As for me, I’m heading out to edit.

A few more photos of Extinction Rebellion and their sailboat on K and 16th this morning, which I've since learned is called the Great Barrier Reef.

Another shot from Mass. and 18th, where a woman chained to a step ladder warned onlookers the whole world is burning and they had to save it. Gloomy, but it's on brand for a group with the name Extinction Rebellion.

If I had to pick one photo that embodies the mood and messaging behind
#ShutDownDC, it'd be this one of a climate activist with a snorkel and pool noodle, dancing against a dismal flooded future.pic.twitter.com/3PhGMUyOk7
