I wanted to share our experiences since returning to SF this weekend after leaving to SIP in a different state on March 16th. A thread: 0/9

- SF feels post-apocalyptic. Sidewalks and tourist spots are still mostly empty on Memorial Day weekend. This is a good thing. 1/9

- We have been shelter-in-place in a purple state with family. Politics shouldn't matter; the fact that wearing a mask is suddenly a political statement is simply insane. However, since it's been politicized, I need to point out the differences. 2/9

- During the strictest part of the shutdown in the purple state we were in, 50% or fewer of the people were wearing masks in public. I saw shoppers without masks speaking directly into the faces of grocery store workers. They kept saying it was a hoax. It was horrifying. 3/9

- This purple state, like most states, has relaxed several restrictions recently. The behaviors have been tough to watch; infections and deaths are climbing. If this state doesn't peak in the summer, it certainly will be overrun in the fall once schools are back in session. 4/9

- By comparison, SF has done a much better job and continues to take COVID-19 seriously. This is directly reflected in the lack of a peak/curve for infections and deaths. However, the homeless issue continues to be a red mark against an otherwise very effective response. 5/9

- This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who has spent any time in the TL, SoMa, or Mid-Market. The drug crisis has been out-of-control for several years and has gotten worse despite promises from the Mayor and BOS to do anything effective. 6/9

- That said, we did see fewer homeless / addicts in our neighborhood and surrounding areas. We have seen more stories about issues with hotels housing homeless residents. I worry about how any social distancing is being enforced for anyone unhoused or in a hotel. 7/9

- It's easier than ever to identify the dealers and addicts right now. If only we had a DA who wanted to make a difference and who was willing to work with SFPD, we could actually make an impact. So frustrating to see how little @chesaboudin cares about SF. 8/9

- While SF is doing a good job overall, we also worry about how behaviors might change as restrictions relax in the area. The reality is that until we have a treatment or vaccine, nothing has really changed other than our tolerance for shelter-in-place. Please be safe. 9/9 END
