Such a moving account of why we become surgeons. To be entrusted to be on the frontline of battle with someone's cancer is the greatest honour & responsibilty, anyone can bestow

This is a really a beautifully written, insightful piece. The notion of “fun” was like the entree. The main course was the discussion of the battle between empathy and endurance. Gives a very realistic portrayal of surgery, I think.

Perspective: As the surgeon prepared to make the first incision in a patient’s belly, he asked the medical student, “Why am I doing this?” When the student began explaining the patient’s condition, the surgeon said, “No, we’re doing this because it’s fun.”

This is well said and really resonates with me. Can't count how many times I have been asked how I can do . I have never identified it as "fun" per se, but yes, it is tremendously enjoyable, and rewarding, and brings great joy and satisfaction to my life.

Wow Many have tried in our own way to write this, but yours is a true and beautiful expression. This feeling is not only permitted, it is required. I wouldn’t want anyone to operate on me who didn’t feel it. To us and those like us.

A really fantastic, mind-opening read addressing the inherent tension in medicine of enjoying work that can be both a cause and consequence of human suffering. Kudos !!

Once, caught off guard when asked why I liked surgery, I blurted out "because it's fun." And I don't mean that callously - it's fun, miraculous, and incredibly rewarding to take care of patients who trust you with their bodies. I treasure that daily.
