Why are people outraged at Riot Vanguard?

Because it has a kernel mode component that starts on system startup to maintain system integrity at the kernel level to prevent tampering often done for cheating.

I don't really do security at this level. Why would having the anti cheat be on the kernal level a problem? Also, can't you just close the program?

Well the kernel component is supposed to be running 24/7 which raises a privacy question of what it does and what it collects, you can stop the service but I'd imagine the game wouldn't like that once you try to go play. 1/2

Replying to @alert_insecure @JadeTycoon and
But the privacy question is somewhat of a bad point, as any malicious actor (in this case people are saying its a chinese spying driver because Tencent owns Riot.) could collect more than enough of your data in user mode from disk, while the game is running 1/(more than 2)

effectively meaning that doing any sort of spying on you from kernel would be jumping through extra and unnecessary hoops. But there's a lot of paranoia regarding the subject, even though almost every other anti-cheat is in kernel and a few like Faceit or ESEA load on startup.
