It's outrageous how much repair work in NYC public housing has failed to train up and employ public housing residents, violating federal rules. That's why the GND for Public Housing intro'd by had provisions to fix this in cooperation w trade unions.

One of the worst things about this website is how it rewards people taking absurd positions just to dunk on an opponent, even when the underlying positions are almost identical. Some of my favorite ppl in the climate space duking it out over substantively trivial differences.

Let's be clear: a group of Republican insurrectionists succeeded in forcing the Speaker of the House to threaten to tank the global economy if Democrats don't agree to cuts to social security.

Last fall, a group of climate activists known for stopping coal trains organized around a different pursuit: Getting elected en masse to an arcane group affiliated with ISO-NE, the region’s power grid operator. It worked, and it's part of a larger effort.

it seems to be common knowledge by now that we're going to need a lot of problematic materials like lithium for the energy transition — but what if there was another way forward? wrote abt groundbreaking new research from that explores how:

You can't do housing justice, racial justice, environmental justice, or climate justice if you don't link tenant and climate policies. Tenants (and the unhoused!) are the most vulnerable to climate disasters, & green displacement. And last in line for modern green home upgrades.

Great article on our report— bringing it home to MA state policy “It raises questions surrounding EV policy in MA, where climate + transit advocates have expressed frustration with both state and federal climate plans for placing too much emphasis on electric cars.”

Lithium is a key component in EV batteries. Extracting it can have devastating environmental and social effects. But we can decarbonize transit by 2050 without the mining boom, a new report from @cpluscp led by @triofrancos says. Here's how: bostonglobe.com/2023/01/25/sci

There are good starting points in this document, but at a time when the White House is trumpeting all its investments in green homes that especially target homeowners, it's depressing to see it think about tenants w no reference to green investment and/or climate disasters.

The best parts of this policy are a result of tenants organizing. Check out some photos of the fierce #HomesGuarantee leaders below. We won't stop organizing until the administration delivers real, material relief to tenants across the country.

TODAY the White House releases tenant protections policy, following a lengthy process, incl. engagement with #HomesGuarantee tenant leaders. While providing some good organizing hooks, the announcement falls short of issuing directives to regulate rent. washingtonpost.com/business/2023/

Ppl who want to defend doing nothing—or more precisely, leave the current balance of power intact—will mash up the most random, disconnected objections to real change. And now, bc wealth and power are going green, such ppl defend the cruelest, most wasteful versions of decarb.

This is typical of status quo magical thinking. "Oh you want density? But building new apt buildings uses carbon!" Buddy, the US builds 1M new homes a year. 10s-100s of millions of ppl will migrate bc of climate this century. There will be building. The Q is: how do we build?

Replying to @triofrancos
Of course, the U.S. could use good public transportation in its metropolitan areas. And it should build new, high-quality, denser buildings. But the very idea of completely changing the already built urban environment is sick and climate-destructive. The hundred million houses

Ending the climate emergency means being efficient and effective, and exploring different potential pathways for rapid, just transition. It's frankly shocking that no one had attempted to model different scenarios of lithium use for different transpo pathways. But now we have.

I love to be nailed for my "larger social agenda" of not mining the shit out of countless communities to build endless electric cars. Bc of course, cars are such a "natural" feature of human society that they've required endless public subsidies for their entire history.

It's either climate change is an emergency or it isn't. If it is, then we should do whatever is reasonable to fend it off, including mining for lithium. But this kind of thing lays bare the larger social agenda of these folks, & they're just using CC to smuggle them in. twitter.com/aldatweets/sta…

Today, we have an exclusive in the , exploring EV policy in the US in the context of our research. The climate emergency means that we must stop burning gasoline in cars. But how much mining is needed to transition is completely up for grabs.

We got so sick of hearing about all the lithium we need to carpet the roads w electric cars. So we did the 1st study to quantify alternatives. Leading w mass transit, ebikes, and urban density cuts lithium demand by up to 90%, while slashing carbon & giving us mobility & freedom.
