The National Safety Board has confirmed that a derailment took place, and that they are presently investigating. They have not yet released any public information about this derailment. #abpoli #ableg 3/9

The size of the derailment will require CN or CP to replace 1.6 kilometres of track, causing a major delay on their main line. #abpoli #ableg 4/9

Like many other groups, ACW has been calling for new pipeline construction, and for pipelines like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion to be declared in the national interest precisely because pipelines are by far the safest way to transport oil. #abpoli #ableg 5/9

A major spill from a train derailment in one of Alberta's breathtaking national parks would be tragedy. #abpoli #ableg 6/9

It is events like this that hammer home the importance of pipeline construction, and the need for the federal government to take meaningful, concrete action to ensure that pipelines are not being stalled or blocked. #abpoli #ableg 7/9

It is not yet known what the full impact of this train derailment will be on the environment. #abpoli #ableg 8/9

We hope that the damage is minimal, and that all governments take this as a wake-up call about the need to move very quickly to build new pipelines to bring Alberta resources to global markets. #abpoli #ableg 9/9

Update: CN media relations has just now responded to George Clark, to inform him that the incident was limited to one of the Petroleum Coke Gondola style cars coming off the rails and damaging a stretch of their mainline. #ableg #abpoli 1/2

Only 1 of the dual lines was impacted and the significant length of damaged rail ties is being repaired as we speak. #abpoli #ableg 2/2

Maybe you should change the headline. Only 1 car derailed, and it wasn't even a oil tanker, not a big insident.

Hmmmm... I think the TSB might disagree. 1.5 kilometers of track damage with only one railcar leaving the tracks is a lucky miracle. Especially right alongside a lake. I call it a timely wakeup call.

I would be surprised if the #TSB considered it major. 1st it is multi track so no shut down but some minor train delays. 2nd 1.6 mile or km of track damage COULD be repaired by the time I go to bed. I luv oil by rail, helps my #RR shares #cdnpoli

Sure but they are away from danger to many and can be easily and quickly fixed. Our rail system goes through highly populated towns and cities.
