  1. Tonight I went to for the first time in at least 18 months. It was exactly the same as it was pre-pandemic, which is oddly comforting.

  2. I have a bridge to sell to the folks who thought Denis Villeneuve would be deferential and obsequious about Marvel movies.

The arts guide is here! I wrote about the AFI Latin American Film Fest and an upcoming Mary Lattimore concert, but the whole thing is expertly curated. Fire it up along with your calendar

Tomorrow I am attending a public screening for a movie I’m assigned because, after being promised a viewing link, the studio can’t seem to share them. Nice job, [REDACTED], I’m sure this will get me to like your dumb movie more!

This is fantastic news! Landmark has a great midnight/rep program in DC, and I'd love to see what they do with a historical theater like The Uptown.

Disturbing news. He’s one of the world’s most gifted filmmakers, and a lovely man. (Also Cannes prize-winner Loveless.) Fervent prayers for his recovery.

I did not care for The Alpinist, a documentary with misleading structure that exploits audience good faith. A story and subject like this deserves a slightly more withering approach. My review

I don't know when it happened - probably somewhere between Black Widow and the latest trailer - but I realized I could just stop covering or keeping up with the MCU. I find its pervasive mediocrity depressing, and now that I'm out, I feel relieved.

Today is Brian De Palma’s birthday. If you’re like me and find most 9/11 remembrances painful, offensive, or grotesque, you could always watch Blow Out or Body Double.
