Getting interview requests from news outlets now. I'm not an expert. You want someone like or Ralph Baric () about , or about viruses in general.

The epi curve from causing concern. First case 1 Dec, clearly infected in Nov, no connection to Huanan market. No epi link between first and later cases. Many cases not market connected.

Wuhan is to biotech what Shenzhen is to electronics. White label manufacturers there make many critical reagents sold by major lab supply vendors. If the lockdown continues, research worldwide may be affected.

Here's your periodic reminder that basic research is only "useless" until it suddenly becomes the most important thing in the world. 20 years ago, coronavirology was an obscure sub-field the public never heard about. Good thing we funded it anyway.

Right now, the correct answer to all public worries about is "We don't know, but we're working on figuring it out and will keep you posted. Meanwhile, get your flu shot, wash your hands, and drive safely, because the boring stuff is still way more likely to kill you."

Chinese National Health Commission Vice Minister says that the Wuhan coronavirus 'could mutate', the press picks it up and blindly transmits it. Viruses mutate with every replication cycle; the question is whether the changes have any consequence. Happens with every new outbreak.

This reminds me of a conversation that I had with some of my Immunology students after the last class. I showed them some recent papers talked about some new areas of research. They wondered if "immune system" was the best name. They were fans of "the homeostasis system".
