My opinion would be to preserve the Majors and FedEx Cup playoffs as the premier events. Get rid of the PIP and drastically limit the number of events. Host events only on WORLD CLASS courses (i.e. the Genesis was so fun to watch because Riviera is such a great course). Thoughts?

It seems like the tour got even more confusing because it’s so multi-tiered now. You have all these types of events:
-Majors
-FedEx Cup Playoffs
-Designated events
-Non-designated events
-Invitationals
-Fall events
Did you know Fall events no longer offer FedEx Cup points?

If one of your goals as the is to engage fans and attract new ones (especially the younger generation) then why is the no longer a designated event?? The younger generation loves this event, but now it’s at risk of losing big names 🤦♂️

What about non-designated (standard) events? Is there less motivation for top players to play in them? When you’re a top player and you have 16 events with huge purses, with some having less competition, it seems unrealistic they would want in play in them

Designated events will no doubt attract a ton of viewers, but IMO it protects the top players even more by limiting the competition and making only 5 spots available for middle-of-the-pack players to qualify.

To qualify for a designated event, you need to be one of the following;
-top 50 in previous year points
-top 10 in current year points
-top 30 in world ranking
-top 5 in most recent event points
-current year winner

But designated events are completely different. Field sizes got reduced to 70-80 players (instead of 132+) And there’s no cut after 36-holes.
Did the PGA TOUR just copy LIV? LIV has small fields with no cuts. Isn’t a bad look when you copy the competition?

PIP aside, there are now 16 elevated-purse events instead of 14. This includes the majors, the PLAYERS, all FedEx Cup playoff events, and 8 events now called “designated events.” Format and qualifications for the majors, the PLAYERS, and FedEx Cup playoffs remain the same.

More changes
The PIP got reduced from $100M to $50M. Wonder why? Maybe word got around how bad the idea was. This is the Google search awards. You get a year-end bonus for how many clicks you generate. Bet you didn’t know ‘s dad helped with the algorithm

Suddenly you’ve
- Created a new market premium for players to get paid more
- Aligned big brands with your tour by making them more central to it
- Undercut LIV’s team schtick
- Created fun buzz with things like free agency
- A new reason to care more about elevated events

Structure it like college golf, do it just at elevated events, pick top 5 players based on whatever ranking you want. Keep track throughout the season and award some prize/big trophy at the end.

There’s maybe some other way of deciding teams via a draft instead if you wanted, like I said this is half-baked

OEMs ideally buy in so teams could be like:
Team Taylormade
Team Callaway
Team Titleist
Team PING
Team Cobra
Team Srixon
Team PXG
Etc
(Don’t moan about it being too corporate F1 has teams repping energy drinks and car companies plus we all already use and love these brands)

Half-baked maybe bad idea but at least it’s free so fair trade:
Seems like lots of golf fans think LIV’s team idea is kinda cool in theory, and sometimes I wonder why the tour doesn’t try to replicate it because seems like they could pretty easily?

Yes, golf is entertainment. Yes, golf is a business. But I think the game itself needs to be defended. Otherwise, the clowns roll in

For those that care, I want the PGA Tour to succeed. But the tour level is an absolute mess right now. It’s terribly fascinating. I honestly can even believe what’s going on. Serious discussion needs to happen not just in PGA Tour board rooms.

Paying out players for likes and clicks may grow the entertainment value, and qualify personalities into big events, but I’d rather not watch personalities shoot +2. I want to see great shots no matter who hits them.

PGA tour players already post on social media and interact with the fans. Why should we pay them to do more? The needed a way give them more money to prevent them from joining . The writing is on the wall.

Everyone jumps on the band wagon and says golf is a business, it’s entertainment, you have to encourage top players to interact with the media, etc. Is this not already happening?
Are you not already entertained?! 😂

*correction. Yes, Patrick Reed is not on the PGA TOUR and not eligible for the PIP, but I think you get my point. and players earn big $$$ when videos get picked up on major news outlets

There are other problems with the PIP, but they simply need to get rid of it. The future of the game doesn’t look good when programs reward players for their online game. Let’s grow the game, not clowns within the game.

The PGA Tour also knows the PIP can also help them drive more profit by driving higher broadcast and licensing deals. Think about it, if Patrick Reed keeps throwing tees at players, he’ll climb up the PIP, and the PGA tour gets major news outlets to pick up the story.

Yes, the PIP came out in 2021 before the LIV tour began, but the PGA Tour was well aware of what was going on so they had to act quickly and create a program that increased player compensation.

3rd is the motivation behind the PIP. Is this a way to compensate players for helping grow the game or out of fear of losing them to LIV tour? Considering the timing of the PIP, obviously the latter.

2nd is the amount of money for this program. Giving out $100 million to 20 players who generate the most online attention is putting the carrot in the wrong place. It may motivate players to do stupid things and the whole program could backfire.

Just imagine a young Tour player who misses an opportunity to play in one of those big events - that could change his career - because of a guy got more media mentions. Isn’t that insane?

This leads to another problem I hope does not come true, and that’s the possibility of a player on the PIP qualifying for one of these events instead of a player that has more FedEx Cup points or a better World Ranking.

The 1st is how the PIP can qualify you into events with elevated purses - purses that range from $15 million - $25 million (the most ever). Why in the world should web searches qualify you into one of these big events?

The PGA tour is dishing out $100 million to the top 20 players on the PIP. I see problems with this on so many levels.

The Player Impact Program (PIP) on the PGA tour is rewarding PGA Tour players for the attention they bring to the sport. According to the PGA TOUR, the PIP is based on web searches, media mentions, and consumer awareness.

Btw, all this can work in reverse for good players that hook high lofted clubs. With short irons and wedges, they could flatten the lie angle, open the face, weaken the grip, and use extra stiff shafts.
1
Show this thread
Do you ever see amateurs shut the face at setup with longer clubs. They do this instinctively for the same reason. It works, and some say it’s a bad habit, but I’m not against it…

These ideas would allow you to keep your ball position the same and return your hands ahead of the ball (the same amount) at impact and apply the same exact torque to the grip club to club. *Yes, it may cause you to hit down on the driver, but at least you’ll be in the fairway.

Here are a few ideas to standardize the swing:
Two ideas I like
2) progressive soft tipped shafts
4) progressive closed club face
Two ideas I don’t like (but work)
1) progressive upright lie angles
2) grip indicator lines to help golfers with a progressive strong grip

Club companies have tried different things to make the game easier, but they fail to solve (correctly) for this.

When the loft plane tilts like this, higher lofts (i.e. wedge) point more left (for a righty). Since we don’t strike the ball with the shaft perpendicular, nor do we strike the ball with a perfectly square face, loft plane is always tilted at impact
1
Show this thread
The answer lies with loft plane. Loft plane tilts when the shaft is not perpendicular to the ground and the face is not square (about every time you hit the ball). This pic is a club nearing impact. Top laser = wedge & bottom laser = driver. Connect them and you have a plane.
1
Show this thread
Off-set are not the answer. It gives the face more time to square but it introduces another factor - making good contact with the ball with the leading edge progressively more behind the hosel. Plus, off-set can easily turn into a hook.
