We asked 4 LDP Presidential candidates their stance on human rights diplomacy. 3 of them - Seiko Noda, Fumio Kishida, and Sanae Takaichi - expressed support for introducing the “Human Rights Violations Sanctions Law” (ie. On other tangible policies, Kishida and Takaichi were the most specific. Kishida proposed to create a new post, a Special Advisor to the Prime Minister in Charge of Human Rights. Takaichi said she will do all she can to pass a resolution condemning CCP's human rights violations.
Noda is relatively reluctant and Kono is less specific. Noda emphasized the importance of addressing domestic human rights issues to avoid being criticized for “double standard.” Kono will collaborate with states with similar values to stand against dictatorship and surveillance.
