IPv4 Market Roundup. Prices did not continue climbing in 2019 the way they had been. If you've been waiting, it may be time to sell IPv4 addresses.

Amusing note: a co-worker pointed out today that children born now will turn 18 after Y2038 (for any code looking at this).

Very interesting summary of some risks with outsourcing mobile network operations in Europe. I've heard cases of European ISPs unable to deploy IPv6 (in otherwise IPv6-dominant countries) because it wasn't included in the N-year outsourcing contract with their vendor.

Less than 18 years left until Y2038! It's time to get started and impacts are already being seen in code dealing with future dates (eg, expirations, forecasts). I suspect I'll be re-posting this blog post or its successors annually for years to come:

Open source + 3D printing is awesome! A few months back I designed a watch charging stand and uploaded the FreeCAD files to . My first print broke (knocked off table by 3yo). Someone improved on my design and uploaded it, so I then printed that for the replacement.

Summary of the Microsoft issue included in the Patch Tuesday patch today. (Sounds like bogus ECC certs can be created with non-standard parameters claiming to be signed by a legit CA but which are degenerate and not actually signed by the CA?)

Crazy theory: the Yoda race has weird genes that let them be amazing force wielders. When Baby Yoda was created, the germ plasm was also used to create a hybrid (Anakin). Which, points out, might make Baby Yoda the “father” of Rey.

Although it looks like this provision was only in the House version of the bill and may be removed during reconciliation?

Who knows what the IPv4 market price curve will look like over the next 10 years? Will this be enough added supply to change the pricing curve? Will holders of blocks try to sell sooner to beat our the DoD sale(s)? Will buyers hold delay purchases knowing these will come up?

At the same time, this will accelerate the shift of a major purchaser (the DoD) to IPv6-only which will impact supplier behavior. I'm very curious how this got into the bill.

What is unclear is how much big chunks of /8's will sell for (public pricing mostly stops at /16's) as well as how this will impact market pricing for IPv4. A pipeline for IPv4-for-purchase will help with some business decisions. It will be fascinating for economists to study.

This will be hugely impactful in a bunch of ways, but I'm not sure exactly what those will be yet. This requires the DoD's sale of 13 /8's of IPv4 over the next 10y and 2 /8's over the next 3 years. Each /8 is ~16.8M addresses and worth 1/3 of a billion dollars at $20/IP.

I really hope the new "Project Connected Home over IP" from mandates IPv6 support. When putting "IP" in the name of a new standard, I really hope this doesn't imply only "legacy IP" (IPv4), although a bridge will need to exist for households still lacking IPv6.
