Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something. This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

My Twitter feed this morning is basically every single government technologist I know (which is many) saying something along the lines of, “We could have told you that was going to happen.” So that’s entertaining. But, seriously, we could have told you that was going to happen.

Part of (by no means exclusive) the Iowa problems is relying on magic, I mean IT, to solve a problem that didn't need solving. Remember that, Halifax, when you embrace E-voting.

Canada may need to intervene. We can’t afford to have a failed democracy on our southern border. I’m thinking UN Chapter 6 mandate, stability ops, organize and monitor elections, a little institution building, maybe a truth & reconciliation commission. 2-3 year mission. Tops.

3 February 1919 - War artist, A. Y. Jackson, visits fellow artist and friend, Arthur Lismer, in Halifax. Over his stay one of his most famous pieces that came out of his visit was Entrance to Halifax Harbour. This painting now belongs to the Tate Gallery in England.

This go-bag contains every notebook I’ve filled in the last several years. If you’re , keep a notebook in reach at all times, and soon you too will have a bag of notebooks to rescue during a house fire and that’s how you’ll die sorry

Nice quote from a historian in that Wikipedia article: "Nothing better described the times than the fact that dangling a watch held as security for a poker debt was widely regarded as a justifiable provocation for resorting to firearms."

It sort of makes sense, but it seems nobody ever really duelled like that. People tended to duel in the traditional manner, or just more or less informally shot at each other - and even that happened a lot less often than you'd think from watching Westerns! So now you know!

So all the standing and staring and wiggling fingers in classic Western duels is waiting to see who's going to lose their nerve first and go for their gun - and then also to see if the other fighter is quick enough with his draw to respond and still claim self-defence.

The clincher of the duel was that Hickok successfully argued self defence at the murder trial afterwards because Tutt allegedly drew his gun first, even though they fired almost simultaneously.

Turns out all those TV and movie showdown duels are based on exactly ONE single incident that happened in 1865 - a duel between Wild Bill Hickok and Davis Tutt, which was written up in Harper's Magazine and then became iconic
