I'm not a black woman but I agree with you AJ and AKM. We as a country are FAILING BLACK WOMEN and our next president has to take that issue head on. The maternal mortality statistics are shocking, indicative of such prejudice and implicit bias, and bold change is needed asap.

Same with me and fyi, black womens’ outcomes with midwives are so, so much better, pre-natal, birth and post-natal, and it’s economically much easier on them as well. We need states to start not just legalizing midwives, but encouraging practices.

I have been reading articles stating that too. It was more common in the community just a generation before mine. My gmother delivered a few of her babies at home and often called to deliver other babies in the neighborhood. I wonder why there has been a decline in this practice

And midwifery is a very skilled and enlightened profession. It would be a great career option and is excellent, personal, local healthcare. It needs to have a major resurgence in this country and it would immediately address life and death issues for black women and their babies.

I still have people come up to me saying your grandmother help me deliver my babies. My sister delivered at home. The nurses were shocked at how perfect she was (temp, umbilical cord).

And the still billed my sister over 12K for a home delivery when took them in to make sure everything was OK.

We must legalize it nationwide and start getting women trained and certified and make it a norm. We can’t wait for institutionalized racism to end. That’s a joke. We need to care for ourselves and end the institutional dependency.

I was warned by my friends when I joined twitter not to do that but I had to jump in there.

I lectured my sister last week not to do it and then today happened.

She was embarrassing herself. On the plus side, got my first block!

I don't understand why people struggle so much with this...do Dr.'s sometimes disregard white women's pain? yes. But then you triple that disregard, realize it's waaay worse for black women and then you close your mouth.

(late to the party but) this is just hearsay, but a med student admitted the problem was medicine in schools is STILL geared towards white male wellness, so not only is it female illness/wellness that's less-represented, all PoC too! so it's not just Drs, it's their schooling!

This is literally the answer to almost every problem we have. The two defaults are white & male. If you fit one or both categories, you are better off.
