This is huge. 's Constitutional Court has ruled that the petitioners (opposition politicians & ) will receive payment from the electoral commission to cover their costs & that Pres Mutharika must cover his own costs.

Got rejected by every US econ PhD program I applied to except for UNC (just couldn't get that math GRE up enough, despite being a math and econ major) Decided to go overseas instead - have never regretted that decision

I don't sound it, but I feel as European as I do British and American Swapping out my red passport for another blue one won't change how I feel inside This will be a long, sad step back, but I have to believe we will eventually find our way back again

This wouldn't be a perfect fix (the graph above suggests it definitely wouldn't!) but maybe if a $ from an offshore company in the Cayman Islands was treated as risky as a $ from Nigeria, we'd be better at catching this stuff (18/18)

Also: maybe it is time to start putting equal emphasis on indicators that a country might be at risk of facilitating a dirty transaction as is put on indicators that a country might be the origin of a dirty transaction This would mean < weight on the CPI and > on secrecy (17/n)

But BO registries are very hard to maintain & verify - layering makes it easy to present someone as a BO who isn't really a BO Some have suggested making them public would make things move faster But maybe strict auditing and severe penalties for incorrect info would be a start
