Thread: I know we don't do @F1 very much here in the U.S., but you don't have to be race fan to recognize the passing of a great champion. 3-time Formula 1 champ Niki Lauda died yesterday at 70. If he were remembered only for his titles, he would rank among the greatest. But...pic.twitter.com/uLaqA3jALJ

2/ ...even more impressive than his wins was his comeback from a near-fatal crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix at the fabled Nurburgring. Lauda, the prickly perfectionist Austrian, thought the 'ring's safety precautions were lacking, and tried to organize a driver boycott.pic.twitter.com/bO1HPhFUgE

3/ He was proved right. Shortly after the start, his Ferrari veered right (Sir Jackie Stewart thinks it was a mechanical failure), smashed through the fence, hit a berm, spun back onto the track and burst into flames. Drivers stopped to pull him from the crash and did, but only..pic.twitter.com/eOxkFlzBSu

A remarkable six weeks later, after holding a press conference (!), he raced again and finished fourth in the Monza Grand Prix. When he removed his helmet, his burns...pic.twitter.com/wAZaR2i4Pz

9/ Although not so huggable (ha!) he built up an affectionate relationship with on-track rival, Brit James Hunt. Their styles were different -- Lauda, the precise technician; Hunt, the risk-taking showman -- but were both great drivers who respected and pushed each other.pic.twitter.com/3SIVVg83o9

RIP the Great #NikiLauda. Here’s our last meeting in #MonteCarlo in ‘18 We first met while making the movie Rush. The F1 world knows of his grit & intensely competitive spirit, but that matched w/his keen intelligence & wisdom made him a distinctively remarkable man. a force. pic.twitter.com/SMizNt9Hge

12/ This morning on @BBCWorld (which appropriately led with Lauda's death), Sir Stewart said he thought the lung damage Lauda suffered in his crash contributed to his death. For a man who willed himself back from death in 1976, the past 43 years must have seemed like a gift. RIP
