Another thing we did was an impulse bowl. I got them to write activities down on little bits of paper, folded them up and put them in the bowl. When they were unruly, they'd take a piece of paper and do whatever is on it.

Depends how old/what your kids are like. That could go horribly wrong. They can't write 'x needs to do y'. It needs to be something they all do
