It is less about the computer time for me and more about ensuring kids read, are social and physically active, with multitude of interests. It is about what they should include in their lives more than exclude.

Video games make you read, or often social, and are a diverse medium that lets you explore many interests!

The first real program I ever wrote all on my own figuring it out from scratch & language reference manuals before there was an Internet or I even had a modem to find a BBS was a (bad) clone of Space Invaders.

Me and my son do all budgeting based on Age of empire resources. :-/ . Wood, food, gold, stone, villagers etc. he is too young to play, but I still find using age of empire as the most effective strategic discussion tool
