Manipulation of the PATH environment variable can lead to direct execution of a malicious binary if it is named the same as the binary executed by the privileged process AND the malicious binary appears in PATH first

Note: This also depends on whether the OS prioritizes searching the current working directory before checking PATH. In which case, this doesn't work. If your binary is in the same current directory of the running process, then this may be why you can't exploit it.
