Slavers held the narrative until the last 60 odd years. Many scholars, black-and-white, have transformed writing about slavery. The scholarship on slavery is the crown jewel of American historiography. People have worked hard on this. Let’s not act as if they have labored in vain.https://twitter.com/ToriGlass/status/1209317426489372674 …

I’m going to wade completely out of my depth and out of my lane on this one and comment. The concern that the 1619 Project was too heavy handed and that slavery deserves more nuance when the slavers owned the entire narrative for 400 years is, well, white supremacy. https://twitter.com/agordonreed/status/1209236720123875328 …

There may have been some heavyhandedness & nuance is good but maybe a little shock therapy was just what the MD ordered for a lot of us white folks. They made a lot of valid points and deserved better than the Wilentz letter.

This has some of the tint and tone of the SH TJ controversy in that was not particularly controversial out side of the “moral impossibilities” set. I’m now thinking of Hitchens Jefferson book. 🤔

It is ludicrous for Hannah-Jones to argue that slavery fueled the revolution. The first draft of the Declaration of Independence contained an explicit condemnation of slavery and blamed the king for it. Not every slave owner loved slavery. But social media hates nuance.

Dunmore's proclamation is the foundation of her argument - which is unfortunate. The proclamation was a reaction to separatist actions, not their catalyst.

I think what is hard for many is how can we celebrate all that is good with our country while acknowledging the sacrifices certain groups were forced to make in order for us to be the country we are.

Why is it hard? That’s a sincere question. Every historical period and place is complex.
