    Cop convicted of planting crack on innocent couple. Given probation. Judge “swayed by how he lost his job, pension, & health.” In other words, the same consequences for people I represent jailed on bail *before conviction* that no judge ever cares about.

  12. 4) An “origins” debate that does not blame slavery for creating racism will require a different way of thinking about the problem; a deeper look at the history of culture and attitudes about race among people who are not black. But that is likely more discomfiting.

  14. 2) Of course, Win Jordan discusses this in White Over Black, & Phil Morgan takes this up a bit in Slave Counterpoint. There is a marked preference, among many, for the belief that slavery created racial thinking; that a governing class tricked many whites into racialist thought.

  15. 1) Re-reading Chris Tomlins’s Freedom Bound for my class with PSO, I’m struck by how his meticulous research reiterates the obvious, to me, point that racialist (racist) thinking was present from the very beginning of English colonial adventures.
