A thread on the occult art of memory 1. This beautiful illustration from Ramon Llull's "Ars Magna" (Great Art) demonstrates two of the key elements of his understanding of memory & knowledge: - the importance of the senses & imagination - interconnectedness

    7. A final one, obviously - how many NDAs have been signed in each of the last 5 years (either a great proxy or a sign a place does a *whole* lot of off the books super secret patentable research)

    6. It's also interesting that the metrics & proxies disabled folk would point to are rarely the ones people advocating for us would think of. Another reason why I thought the question was so good

    5. It was great to be asked for tangibles. Yes, they are only proxies for "actions match words" and "no one is above the law" and "flexibility" etc but those things are often very hard to gauge in timely fashion precisely because impressive policies & nice words mask them

    3. How does the level of official reports of harassment relate to the self-reported level in staff surveys? If the latter is a lot higher that suggests there's a reason people don't feel safe coming forward

    2. The main one - do the staff have the same level of access to adjustments and assistance as the students. IT systems are a really good bellwether for this

Thread on accessibility in higher education 1 A friend who's going to work for another university asked me today what indicators I could think of that a place had good practice in relation to disability, esp hidden. It's a really good question so I thought I'd share some answers

In today's accessibility farce I have yet again had to disclose intimate details of my disability to a department at work who wouldn't need to know if they followed basic requests regarding communication methods.

Just made a little illustration - regular brain versus brain. It puts so many obstacles in my path, forcing me to take the long way around, getting increasingly frustrated, and sometimes making it impossible to reach my goals.

On same subject, just back from the gym (lucky my body CAN work out, & working out really helps). I did multiple sets not only of weights but of intervals on the erg & I can remember every detail of every one of them. The problem (in this case)'s not our brains it's their systems

but my ability to access an actual job related to any of that will be judged entirely on my inability to use an inaccessible system. Welcome to higher education's wonderful world of inclusion
