I've repeated this so many times the past year. "We're a start-up so we have to X..." is a fallacy. These are choices. Choose to treat people well.

If your company requires you to work nights and weekends, your company is broken. This is a managerial problem, not your problem. This is a process problem, not a personal problem. This is an ownership problem, not an individual problem.

You wrote about this 7 years ago. I still read it to the team on the first day of every new hire.

Personally I believe that the most important qualification for going into management is a commitment to do the job well. Ethics are more important than inclinations.

The raw acknowledgement of how common toxicity and bias are, as well as their broad impact on the humans working in the industry, is really refreshing & uplifting to see. Thanks . From today's newsletter (reading section specifically):

People say “you made <popular thing> so you’re smart”. But many projects aren’t difficult to build at first. Becoming an expert is often a consequence of tinkering, not the cause. Developing an intuition for what exists and what should exist has more impact than technical smarts.

2 keys to better job descriptions: 1. STAY IN YOUR LANE: don’t prescribe candidates’ backgrounds. Stick to describing what the JOB is to be done. 2. BE SUPER SPECIFIC: be v clear, to inform applicants AND hiring team on what you need / why you need it. 6/

I don’t think you should measure productivity, at least not as a measure of comparing teams . Instead, regularly look at perceived improved productivity, by making a survey.

When I lived in Iceland, I found a lump. I had no idea how to navigate finding a doctor, so I went to our show's production manager. Me: I found a lump. Can you help me find a doctor? PM: Just go to the cancer center. Me: Okay. How do a get a referral? PM: What's a referral?

I wouldn’t be comfortable with that tbh. It’s a combination of reinforcing a personality cult, ignoring crucial contributors and in general picking stereotypical loud dudes (including me). One could just write “IMPLICIT BIAS” instead.

Just curious because there's an app with paid features I've been looking to release for a while so wanted to see how others had done OSS paid apps. Also curious how you would think about doing OSS right from the start (or just OSS client from start) now that you have hindsight

what parts of Insomnia are open source? It seemed like it's the client, site, and supporting libraries. No server-side code. Not sure about paid features of client either. Hard to tell without digging too deep into the code 😅 Looks like it's MIT now too

tfw you search for "insomnia app", as in , but instead get results for sleep apps. annnd it's also 4AM and the only reason you're even looking this up at this time is because you actually have insomnia. oh the irony
