    ICYMI earlier today, watch Randi's speech for a dose of inspiration and solidarity

    I just thanked educators for their work during COVID, laid out a vision for schools to be safe & welcoming for all, lifted up literacy & civics & communality schools & pledged to support educators who are teaching honest history. Here it is

    Respect student's ability to discuss and learn about racism, which is a fact of many of their everyday lives. Censorship is never the answer

    82% of college students overall say public schools should teach “that patterns of racism are ingrained in law and other institutions,” including almost half of college Republicans. -

    THIS is why academic freedom is so essential in higher ed, the professionals in the classroom can & should lead students through difficult topics

    Let’s be clear: critical race theory is not taught in elementary or high schools. It’s a method of examination taught in law school & college that helps analyze whether systemic racism exists—& in particular whether it has an effect on law & public policy. -

    The seat of our democracy was attacked by violent insurgents. Capitol Police officers were assaulted and overrun. This was not tourism, as one congressman described it. This was terrorism. The truth must not be obstructed; it must come out. -

    Just as true in higher ed as it is in K12! When profs, especially contingent faculty, are supported the quality of the classroom experience goes up & students thrive

    What we should be doubling down on right now is lowering class size and providing the other conditions and tools educators need to meet the academic needs of our students. -

    Listening to the AFT's conference is a powerful reminder that union members came together to fight for each other and their communities when no one else would. We'll never know how many lives they saved, but we should remember this next time they ask for our support.

    There are countless other ways the AFT is there for you. Take student debt. We are fighting to cancel $50,000 of student debt, to fix Public Service Loan Forgiveness and, in the short run, to keep the moratorium on student debt payments. -

    Important to have give a full defense of teaching history. Right-wing attacks on teaching about racism are a disservice to our students & a threat to democracy and educators have a professional responsibility to teach about it.

    As a former CUNY ASAP student, I second this ✊🏼 having a unlimited metro card, book vouchers and guided personal advisement, really did set me up for success at 👏🏼

    Free metrocards for CUNY students would be a great step, but an even better model w a proven track record is CUNY ASAP metrocards+ADVISING+cohort model+books is what leads to student success

    Loan type (FFEL/Direct) is a huge issue for our members seeking PSLF, the switch was invisible to borrowers 2 weeks ago ED called former FFEL borrowers in PSLF a "matter of equity" & now CFPB has confirmed FFEL servicers mislead public servants

    PSLF was never meant to be a high stakes gamble where borrowers were expected to know more about the law than their own servicers. The time to make public servants whole is NOW

    [BREAKING] confirms what we & thousands of public service workers already knew: industry has been engaged in a widespread scheme to cheat borrowers out of promised loan forgiveness. It’s time for to right this massive wrong. Thread 🧵
