Easing into this fascinating
@FocusOnLiberia feature on Liberian Pres Tubman with@ducorkid &@SamuelGToe. The lack of scholarly interest in Tubman outside of Liberia hinders efforts to understand African politics during the seminal decolonisation era.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgVPomz1UQQ …Thanks. "The couple first met in 1990 when he impressed her by narrating her life story and writing her name on a piece of paper without her saying a word. They spent 45 minutes together on that first meeting, by the end of which he had asked for her hand in marriage."https://twitter.com/BBCAfrica/status/1462762293146574851 …

Just received a link for feedback on an unsuccessful fellowship application where I can not only access my own evaluation report, but also the personalised feedback and rank/score that all 121 applicants received. Is such transparency a standard practice in mainland Europe?

Certainly the very weak dust jacket blurb doesn't do it justice.pic.twitter.com/gG7URcV0ec

It gets a bit rushed from 1975 on, but like Joshua Nkomo's memoir, I found Abel Muzorewa's autobiography an informative and accessible read, especially given that it was published in 1978, at the peak of his campaign efforts. Ashamed it took me so long to get around to it.pic.twitter.com/KQ28ynqjPi

"The audience at Thursday’s hearing included Ameen Johnson, 57, and his brother Shahid Johnson, 55. Their father, Mr. Islam, spent more than 20 years in prison before being paroled in 1987 and died in 2009. They had not been notified of the hearing ahead of time..."https://twitter.com/Jonesieman/status/1461480138588270603 …

I found this to be a bizarre little piece. Anyone else familiar with the claim here that "almost all of the freed slaves came from....South Carolina"? 'Tis new to me. Can't even think where they would have got that from.https://twitter.com/MhuriroOliver/status/1457424481568296972 …

Overheard on the SABC nightly news the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation advocate self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. Distressing that there seems to be no pressure on Joe Biden to adopt a similar position.

I'm always intrigued by the widespread, usually subtle expression of sentiments that greatness = importance and the associated impact on intellectual production & historiography. This piece offers one of the more forthright expressions of such views that I've encountered.https://twitter.com/Sisonkemsimang/status/1459897959525478406 …

A stimulating keynote and I was especially enthused to hear about late 19th century "Liberian fever" in the US. Will be looking forward to the fruits of the research.https://twitter.com/terry_renaud/status/1458435315320999936 …

Broadcasters running a number of curated soundbites to the effect that he was bad but notably better than his predecessors, Pres. Ramaphosa among them. A smaller number of soundbites observing that he was simply bad.pic.twitter.com/bPmTYaGKts

Interesting2watch South African TV coverage of de Klerk's death. Lead story, but not dominating the news cycle as a similar passing would in USA. Coverage aims to strike a 'balanced' tone, but is generally negative. Incidentally, never realised how uninspired SABC graphics are.pic.twitter.com/NdQVkH27AB

#Twimbos I'm getting very interested in ZUPO, especially the party's publicity secretary, Gibson Magaramombe. Anyone know of any of these ZUPO parliamentary candidates? Eager for more info on the party.#ZWpic.twitter.com/O71rlaHjOb
