In early April, I wrote an article summarizing thoughts I've had about society and how to improve it. Read it here:

This is a really special community, and I'd encourage even the slightly curious to apply. Society has not quite yet established built-in social structures post-college (barring the workplace). With that being said, this is a great example of these high-need social environments.

There are far too many people consuming stories and far too few creating them. I think it’s about time we start decentralizing storytelling away from the likes of Netflix and Disney and increase the volume of our own personal stories.

Localization (knowing where you are in the space), order (knowing where everything is and having quick access to it), navigation (knowing the path/s to get to a desired place), and feedback (response from the environment to an action made) become crucial to the experience (2/2).

A thinking tool I acquired after having explored the complexity of 3D user interface design in AR/VR that I’ve brought into my 2D user interface design is to conceptualize a visual interface as a space and the user as an agent navigating that space (1/2).

Assuming voice does become the leading interaction mode of the next computing platform, I predict that more people will adopt the title of a "linguistic designer" - the intentional design of linguistic tools and techniques for communicating and confirming intent (5/5).

We need ways to express direction, orientation, relative position, coordinate systems, scale, resolution, disambiguation in concise and unambiguous terms (no pointing allowed) (4/5).

When we map spatial concepts into language, what we are doing is aiding in building out a cognitive map of a space, which requires more spoken word to fill out the detail, so isn't super efficient (3/5).

For example, we have yet to come up with an efficient way to express spatial information through language alone. We use words like 'here', 'there' which require the use of pointing (body language) or map spatial concepts or coordinate systems into language (meters) (2/5).

Despite much talk about human-computer interaction heading towards a interaction paradigm, there are areas of language that will need development to truly replace our visual-first ecosystem (1/5).

Learning how to form and break habits is the best skill to learn to improve your success rate in executing on your self-improvement aspirations. We’re like computers running many programs simultaneously and knowing how to open or close them is key to accomplishing life goals.

Aesthetics are a matter of want, whereas utility is a matter of need in an environment of scarcity. When physical or cognitive augmentations catch on, it will be but a matter of survival to keep up with the “fashion”. Interesting times are ahead (3/3).

While today these augmentations largely fulfill aesthetic purposes, I have trouble imagining why the same would not occur for functional augmentations. If anything, I think these could potentially reach broader audiences (2/3).

The mere existence of plastic surgery is evidence that there exists some threshold at which the value presented by certain forms of human augmentation supersede one’s aversion due to cultural conditioning (1/3).

I'm reading at least five pages a day and I'm about 1/7 of the way through about a month in. I've found that it's pretty hard to convince yourself that you're too busy for so few pages of reading each day 😅

This book makes great use of simple conceptual frameworks, illustrative diagrams (that are a stones throw from being full-blown data visualizations), tangible examples, and progressive disclosure of information to build ones intuition of the biological world.

For anyone interested, I'm reading Campbell Biology (11th Edition). This is probably my third stab at learning biology in my lifetime and I think I'm finally internalizing it this time around.

I'm still very much in the absorption phase of my journey, but I look forward to a time where I hopefully will be able to translate knowledge of these systems into meaningful action.

But what amazes me is how order seems to surface in spite of this business. Structural and functional harmonies seem to lie at every corner.

Recently however, I decided to explore the world of atoms, selecting to focus at the biological scale, and one thing that I'm still coming to terms with is the shear complexity that exists here. There is so much going on, across six or so emergent levels of organization.

Practice has equipped me with some sense of how to decompose a complex user interface problem into it's component parts, i.e. exposing the underlying relationships that govern how the system works and revealing clues on how to better optimize the dialogue between the two parties.
