The story behind the paper of our recent article includes a touching personal story from demonstrating how the decision to reveal information to ourselves and others can be one of the most significant decisions we will make.

At the moment policy makers only take into account the impact of information on action when deciding on whether to disclose information. We suggest to consider also the impact on “affect” and “cogntion” to fully assess the impact of info on people’s welfare. 6/7

Different people put different emphasis on these three factors (action, affect, cognition) when seeking information. We hypothesize that such differences may be related to mental health. Empirical evidence will be presented by ! 5/7

    2. AFFECT: Information can make you feel bad (learning you have a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s) or good (learning you have genes that make you resistant). 3. COGNITION: Information can help you comprehend reality and reduce uncertainty or cause confusion. 4/7

    1. ACTION: Info can help make better decisions (knowing that smoking kills you decide not to smoke)but can also lead to worse decisions (knowing the gender of an applicant can lead to worse hiring decisions, not knowing is better). So info can have + or – instrumental utility.3/7

Massive amounts of information are becoming available to people about themselves (their health, traits, financial prospects) and the world. How do people decide what they want to know and what they would rather not know? 3 factors matter – the predicted influence of info on: 2/7

Our new paper: To decide whether to seek information people estimate impact of knowledge on their decisions (action), emotion (affect)& ability to comprehend reality (cognition). Biased estimation can lead to too much/little info. 1/7

A quantifiable symptom of a deep problem that astonishingly is getting worse “Undercitation of women-led papers is increasing over time, particularly within .. men-led teams”. And only 10% of papers in top neuroscience journals have women as first and last authors vs 50% for man

However – when they disagreed the pMFC stopped tracking the confidence of the other. And whether the disagreeing partner was very sure in their choice or not at all did not influence their own confidence. 3/4

Pairs of subjects made binary financial decisions. When they agreed, the confidence of their partner was tracked by the pMFC & the more confident one was the more confident the other became. 2/4

Most speakers said they never gave online talks before – this has not changed in the 7 years we have been running the program. A huge opportunity for others to try out. 7/8
