I was talking about abuses by slaveowners. Tourist, smugly: "Now surely not ALL masters were like that."

. tours plantations: "A woman from NC tells me...'I know [slaves] worked here, but the owners worked, had to manage this place too. I mean, it took a lot of work to manage one of these plantations, even though it was done w/ slave labor.'"

Do you work with the public at a plantation near Charleston, SC? Have you gotten pushback from white visitors about slave history? If yes to all of the above please @ me

I went once to visit a plantation in North Carolina, next to which I was staying, and the place made me want to die, but the comment from few guy showing a slave one-room house was that slavery was actually good for he slaves because “jobs”.

A fave hobby when I lived in Florida was telling white folks who claimed Seminole ancestry that, if that was the case, they might have black in them as well due to that tribe's actions during slavery times. The looks on their faces?

The most racist people I've met love to claim that they are Native American.

"Slavery is taught without context, prioritizing “feel good” stories over harsh realities; slavery is taught as an exclusively southern institution... slavery is rarely connected to white supremacy... and slavery is seldom connected to the present."

After an offensive statement is made, silence might be taken as concession of the point. So, hope this helps you speak some truth.

So I don't know if a long reasoned explanation of why slavery was wrong is the most helpful way to fight racism but

    People's beliefs on race--as with many things--come from emotion/tradition/pride/received wisdom/etc., not logic.

Saying that the presence of slavery somewhere on the continent of Africa somehow justified slavery elsewhere, for different people, is crazy

The African slavery narrative (as told in the US) is used to paint Africans and African-Americans as would-be enslavers. As bad people.

But of course none of that really touches on why this man is wrong.

Slavery in the U.S. and Africa can't be compared. Slavery in the U.S. was qualitatively more horrifying & quantitatively much wider-spread.
