Still frustrated about the CDC guidance and especially the messaging that is being used to defend it. "Anyone who wanted a vaccine had plenty of time to get it." This is patently false. /1

One, the vaccine just became available for the 12-15 year age group. Why not wait another month until many in this group were able to get both shots and develop protection? /2

Two, even those in the 16+ age group who got the vaccines as soon as they were eligible are wrapping up their 2nd dose in some states, because eligibility for them just opened at some point in April. Even if they jumped in on first day eligible, some are not yet fully immune. /3

Three, we still haven't done a big, national push to increase *access* to vaccines. Availability and access are not the same thing. There are still many who would happily get the vaccine, but can't get days off work, or lack transportation, or have childcare issues, etc. /4

Before the new guidelines, there should have been a warning time to those still unprotected and increased access for those who need it. Go to workplaces, community centers, door-to-door. Give them time & *access* to get vaccinated before exposing them to the unmasked. /5

I 100% agree that the science shows that vaccinated individuals are very safe. But many still *want* to be vaccinated & can't be or haven't been yet for many reasons. They're now at risk. It's an own goal to not have worked in this area first before changing the guidelines. /fin

Adding in this data about vaccination rates in different groups in the US. As many have pointed out, would this change have been made if the country's overall vax rate was as low as some of these groups?https://twitter.com/DraCoquiMD/status/1393523180472520705?s=19 …

If the USA's overall vaccination rates were as low as they currently are among Latinx and Black people, the CDC would NOT have changed their guidelines. #AmericanExceptionalism #Racism is alive, well, and thriving. pic.twitter.com/LpzJljISGp

And why are Native Americans doing so well? In part because of 1) access and 2) an "aggressive outreach campaign" to get folks vaccinated. Need more of this across the country.

.@CDCDirector made the decision w/o the science, or consultations w the state/local govs. Appears to be egged on by Henry Walke who worked closely w Redfield. A bad decision all around.https://twitter.com/sheldonchang/status/1393954056717078530?s=20 …

.@CDCDirector cited the study of 2000 vaccinated health professionals w 94% protection as an evidence for the decision. She conveniently forgot the subjects in the study were very well masked. No study or data yet to show the vaccines' high efficacy when subjects aren't masked.
