Dr. Tara C. Smith Retweeted Atomsk's Sanakan

I've seen a lot of "good ol' boys" BS in scientific publishing, but this may be the worst. Not only a bad paper, but it completely punches down at grad students who previously criticized the work. This never would have been published if it didn't have a Big Name attached.https://twitter.com/AtomsksSanakan/status/1375935382139834373 …

    Dr. Tara C. Smith added,

    Atomsk's Sanakan @AtomsksSanakan
1/J John Ioannidis published an article defending his low estimate of COVID-19's fatality rate. It contains so many distortions that I'll try something I've never done on Twitter for a paper: Go thru distortions page-by-page. This will take awhile. 😑 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/eci.13554 … pic.twitter.com/AyV5RiwQnh

6/n On the other side of the coin, there’s evidence that in some countries that the death figures from COVID-19 may underestimate the true toll by an order of magnitude (or more!) https://www.bmj.com/content/372/bmj.n334 … pic.twitter.com/RSZJXEiJCE

One question is who were the editors who allowed this to be published in this form?

He's the former EIC of the journal, so suspect they are all buddies.

Even then, we might speculate that it might not have been published if the Big Name had not previously been Editor of the journal.

Really at a loss today with this. The fact that this was edited, reviewed and deemed as publishable is disconcerting. It also makes me wonder of this is an indication of what we may start to see more broadly from other journals and authors

It is so bad it makes me wonder if the editors and reviewers at that journal he formerly edited hate ioannidis and are allowing him to fully show his a**.

The fact that Ioannidis is still on Stanford faculty, speaks ill of the scientific standards they currently have.

The ironic thing - clearly Ioannidis targeted them in order to get them to stand down. Which may be the most mistaken belief since WHO said that CoVid could not be transmitted between people. And it maybe the dumbest strategic move since Germany marched on Russia. In winter.

Indeed. I’ve always had immense respect for @GidMK and his dedication and adherence to following the data, but I’ve also respected his outspoken advocacy of following the data and the science, and his unwillingness to stop doing so.
