I always wonder where the fault lines are in such cases. It seems unfair to blame science communication, because loads of pathogens have the ability to create an epidemic, and it seem impractical to try to inform everybody about them all the time.

Most of the time I end up with the media. Exagerating the new by ripping it out of its context may generate excitement, and therefore money. But it's shoddy reporting.

Same deal with E.Coli right. I mean it’s mostly harmless except for certain strains (I forget how they describe them)

Yes, exactly. So many different types but those that do a lot of harm are strains carrying shiga toxins, like O157:H7. Finding a new, dangerous strain doesn't mean we don't already know about E. coli.

My favorites are the ones who stress the "novel" thing and claim nothing existing will work because it's "novel." It's not coronavirus, its *novel* coronavirus Honestly, I dont know how virology twitter have not all checked into hospitals with concussions from face palming.
