To reiterate: this #PHEIC does not mean that #nCoV2019 has been declared a pandemic. Pandemic is specific to sustained human-to-human transmission in multiple regions of the globe. We have 2 other PHEICs in effect right now, for Ebola in DRC and for polio. Neither are pandemics.

I find it ironic that the tweet in my feed above yours about how is this was predicted last week as a pandemic is sourced out of MA, specifically, Harvard. ;)

Nice reminder - unfortunately, the contacts to people from China are much closer than we may know. Coworkers of my brother-in-law are not allowed to come back to Germany for 2 weeks. And guess what, he comes from Wuhan. So stay safe!

For those where we have data, primarily individuals (mostly men) above age 60 with predisposing conditions, such as diabetes or lung diseases. Similar to what you'd expect for respiratory viruses. Interestingly children are almost absent from cases so far.

Absolutely right. But. For Polio we have in western countries vaccinations. Ebola persists in regions with less world travel and it is virulent after having symptoms. For #Coronavirus we don't have vaccinations, it's virulent before you have symptoms with a high R0 value.

In 2 or 3 months, the coronavirus will be completely out of the news and forgotten. Declaring emergency for this is a joke. Look at the deadliest diseases figures in the world and compare to the 170 deaths of the coronavirus.

Therec was one recently where passengers were detained until given the all-clear. Could be an issue if an infected passenger boarded.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/possible-coronavirus-case-cruise-ship-6-000-passengers-docked-italy-n1126471 …
