Hello to new followers. Just wanted to say a few words about who I am and what I do. I'm an infectious disease epidemiologist. Most of my work has centered on the epidemiology & evolution of Staphylococcus aureus, esp in communities. /1

  2. From yesterday--another H2H transmission of in the US, in California and again to a spouse in close contact. This makes 6 total cases in CA. Meanwhile here in Ohio, 2 students at Miami University tested negative (which don't get as much press).

This is a pretty interesting tidbit from the most recent report on . Not surprising - kinda sad, but definitely necessary. The R0 of misinformation is massively higher than the R0 of the virus.

It is challenging to make sense of what is happening during the early stages of an outbreak such as because good actors don't yet have certainty about what is going on, bad actors spread disinformation, and well-meaning people amplify it on social media.

The disease? Diphtheria. The life-saving intervention? Anti-toxin. We prevent diphtheria with now and no longer worry about emergently treating diphtheria patients. Dogs and , my two favorite things!

    1. 's update is out. These numbers are what was reported to WHO as of 10 am Sunday Geneva time. So, probably already out of date but that's the nature of an outbreak. One death outside China now, in the Philippines.

A daily Black scientist thread in honor of (and doubling down today since it's the 2nd). Dr. Marie M. Daly (1921-2003) was an American biochemist; in 1947, she became the first African-American woman to obtain a PhD in Chemistry.

Listen. I know the jokes write themselves here but there’s a very important fact buried in this: macaques carry ***Herpes B***. That’s not the same herpes humans carry. Herpes B is FATAL to humans. That’s no joke.

  14. Emergency kits will help you be prepared for events that are more likely too: snowstorms, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. Be honest: you've talked about what you'd do during a zombie pandemic. Doesn't hurt to do a bit of preparation for a more mundane emergency. /5

  15. The also recommends everyone has an emergency preparedness kit. These are great for people who want to do *something* active to plan for a "just in case." /4

  16. If you're sick & can stay home, please do it. I know not everyone can. If you're an employer, please do all you can to provide employees with sick leave to cut transmission. Be sure you're vaccinated for --if you're sick with flu, symptoms are similar to novel CV. /3

  17. First, doing the same basic things that help to reduce chances of acquiring/spreading any respiratory infection. Wash your hands frequently. Be mindful of touching your face and eyes. Keep your distance from others, & if you're coughing or sneezing, do it in your elbow. /2

  18. I've gotten a lot of questions about how bad this outbreak might get if it ends up in the US. And we just don't know, and I don't find it super helpful to speculate. At the same time, I know there's lots of anxiety. So here's what helps me: a thread. /1

  20. Second time I've seen this type of sentiment (first was about Lysol). "Coronaviruses" are an entire family of viruses, which include those that are generally mild & cause colds, as well as those that cause more serious infections (SARS, MERS, ). Only the latter is new.
