Critical thinking is just a pretentious expression with no meaning beyond 'clear thinking' or 'rational thinking' or-wait for it- just 'thinking'. Analyzing, synthesizing, & evaluating with precision defines thinking. Adding 'critical' does nothing but make the sentence longer.

Schools are teaching thinking in lessons, with no context for the thinking to be based upon? What is the class called? Surely every timetabled lesson in the UK is a named subject with inherent context? How can it be general?

It's not a bad argument... until you realize the uncertainty of today's job market makes specialized critical thinking skills unproductive. Students would learn a specialization, and not get to apply it the way it was intended.
