Nonsense. The founding of the US decoupled the state from religion to an extent and less so in many of the states, but society remained dominated by religion, just it became more of multiple choice for denominations

They did not SUPPORT religion, the 9 states had a legally sanctioned and supported official Christian sect. At best other religions were tolerated
