1. I agree that water will be the most precious resource in space. 2. There is clay on Mars but not on asteroids. Those which are comet fragments likely contain water. 3. GW microwave beams from solar plants in GEO would be just as dangerous for LEO sats as the space elevator.

Carbonaceous asteroids are about 50% clay and contain both water and hydroxyl, which comes out as water. It takes about 500 deg C to 100 deg C to drive it out of them, and they don't get that hot in sunlight so they maintain their water.
