I would personally break the necks of 1,000 rats on the chance that it would save even one human life. This is often the case with clinical trials.

The premise that rats do not have any legal protections is demonstrably false. While the AWA doesn't directly include protections for rats in it, it requires each institution set up an IACUC, which requires scientists justify all animal procedures in their protocols.
