I’ve always understood it to explicitly remind us that we often *don’t* know ourselves, to take a step back and re-examine how we got where we are. (Which is why I got it tattooed on my inner forearm.) I associate it with Socrates’ acknowledgement of his own ignorance.

It seems hard to avoid knowing yourself if you don't know what you need to avoid knowing. Just like avoiding getting to Time Square without knowing where it is located.
