I did my honours thesis on Cicero in British and American newspaper during the Revolutionary War. I was surprised how often the classics were referenced and debated in newspapers on just about everything. Even the lowliest Brit or American knew their Cicero & quoted him regularly

One of my favourite facts is that David Copperfield became an absolute phenomenon in factory towns and cities. Affluent yet usually broke students would do group readings for the illiterate workers when a new strand came out and charged for a listen.
