I think that separation from your sense of self is a common experience with meditation. And maybe a sign to take a step back from sitting meditation. Buddhist teaching also underlines interdependence so engaging with the world.

Thanks Richard. This is reassuring as experienced the “separateness of self” recently & wondered if I was “losing my mind.” Quite a bizarre feeling!

Furthermore, I think buddhists unintentionally equivocate over the definition of "exist". For a culture that (mostly) believes in brains, evolution, and the big bang, it's fairly banal to point out that there's no permanent unchanging "self": It's just the firing of neurons.

"Sally Davies [the author] is feeling insecure" is perfectly valid within buddhist philosophy, even if "I am feeling insecure" is considered confused. The self arises in the mind, like all other phenomena. Sally can take responsibility for X, even if *you* don't "exist".

Mindfulness is when you take your brain autopilot off and use 99% of its CPU just to eat a grape or get from the couch to the bathroom
