Impulse here being used quite wrongly without quotation marks... Reason is effortful and unlike all human impulses. Even at the societal level. Our quest for knowledge perhaps is more like an impulse. But our impulses toward reason are mostly pants.

I totally agree. I'm the author of the article, but the subhead "The move away from myth and toward reason is an ancient human impulse" was added by someone else and actually goes against what I argue....

Interesting read...but there were a few major points I wanted to push back on, though it’s a bit hard to tell after getting to the end where you ultimately stand on (dis)enchanted views.
