Millions of people take antidepressants and report improvement, but the evidence for their efficacy is dubious at best http://ow.ly/zmek50mBelr pic.twitter.com/BSKFVVNCzk

David you seem to have a marked antipathy towards antidepressants despite the actual evidence of their efficacy which is similar to many treatments accepted as effective in general medicine. This does seem to suggest an animosity beyond evidence

Oh I tweet plenty about the limited effectiveness of analgesics too. I do wish that people in both fields would admit more openly that NO treatments work very well.

Thanks for publishing this! It's an important challenge to a complext topic. Very well handled, especially for a topic that is so personal to people.

The book ‘Lost Connections’ by @johannhari101 posits the best thesis.

This is exactly it, trying to cure symptoms and not solving the disease is what is killing depressed people, drugs can help, but they will not always solve the issue. Even though I think we might as well all die first than to see the end of capitalism. It is indeed sad to watch

Seems to be quite a lot of arguing from authority here ('I am a Cambridge academic philosopher'). Largely repeats Kirsch et al. On subgroup response: 'ad hoc' sounds impressive but introduced (I believe) by Karl Popper & not his strongest point.https://twitter.com/NMacFa/status/1098973931766071296 …

From memory, Kirsch et al argue the mean 'not clinically significant' response is 2-3 points on the Hamilton scale. If the decently-responding subgroup is 10% then that would be 20-30 points each. Easily enough to get to less than 8 points (below mild) from 17-23 (moderate). ?
