This is an amazing essay @DagHerbjornsrud -- I've always wondered about this. There's a certain underlying archetype on why women and men in the East are more equal than in the West when it comes to professional situations (domestic situations apply traditional gender roles).

Thank you, appreciate it. Not sure how to explain today's world, though; I'd like to stick to the past and the texts - safer ;-)

This is a great article! Plenty of great information about thinkers/concepts that are rarely considered today. But the headline is needlessly politicized and divisive, does not reflect the content of the article, and is flat out wrong. Philosophy has always been for everyone.

Women and non Western philosophy deserve more attention. Was excited to read your piece and I found some new sources, but the main argument that there was a time where philosophy was a woman’s domain is not backed up at all—you pick your women thinkers through cultures and ages.

Your treatment of Augustine and Aquinas also being “borderline figures who are not philosophers per se” that were more “ideological than any of the women mentioned” made me speculate unfairly why you missed one of the main grand female philosophers, Diotima of Mantinea.
