New post on the blog: The patriarchy is a myth! Or, kind of a myth. Or it's not a myth, but it's actually fine. In some ways. Basically, culture is doing a lot of sexism-fighting in a pretty misguided way.

Traditional gender roles don't make as much sense when our society is safe and resources abundant. But when they aren't, it tends to be men responsible for dealing with threats and providing for the family. Great post by exploring the topic.

Male humans get into fights about 1/1000th as often as male chimps, and we've been self-domesticating for lower aggression for about 300,000 years -- Harvard anthropologist Richard Wrangham in talk today at .

You're in a room of 20,000 people. You get to ask them all 3 (yes/no or binary) questions, which they will answer by self sorting into groups. Which 3 questions do you ask to find the group of people you'd most like to hang out with/get stuck in an elevator with/party with?

I think I have recurring lowkey sorrow that Antarctica is covered in ice. It's got the potential to be such a beautiful entire little continent/archipelago thing, but instead it's serving a super long term in ice jail.

My favorite arguments are ones that pit two ideas from the same cultural trope against each other. For example, "It's racist to decry catcalling; most catcalls are done by POC, where catcalling is a flattering/nonthreatening gesture, and the white protest is unwelcome"

It's true that a majority of New Yorkers, including very strong majority of New Yorkers of color, supported the Amazon deal. But the fact is, if one big chunk of a city's population vigorously and passionately opposes something, it probably won't get done. That's just democracy.

I mean like recognizable improvements over the course of recorded history - as in, given the same knowledge and tools, a good leader today would do better than a good leader in ancient Persia or something.

I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

burn or workshop before? If you found yourself in this situation, would this feel like a normal/easy thing for you, or a weird/challenging thing? Basically I don't know how people are gonna react to "listing positive masculine traits". It might or might not be a big deal.

How would you react? I want to run a workshop at a burn for the celebration of masculinity, where we start by listing positive feminine traits (to get a general feel for it), and then list all the positive masculine traits we can think of. Have you ever done this at a (cont)
