You cannot fucking reason with some people. If a disaster happens, it's "why didn't you stop it?" If a disaster is averted, it's "ha ha obviously there was nothing to worry about, you doomsayers!"

People in developed countries (mostly) don't die from terrible communicable diseases anymore BECAUSE OF THE VACCINES. The Y2K problem didn't crash banking computers and hospital carts and shit BECAUSE PROGRAMMERS FIXED THE CODE. IT WASN'T MAGIC. IT WAS LABOR.

In the case of Y2K specifically, there's a similar issue set to hit in ~18 years! You can look up "Y2038" for details! But you know what? People are ALREADY ON IT, and there's already basically zero chance of it being a global catastrophe BECAUSE OF WHAT WE LEARNED FROM Y2K.

Moreover, some important questions you should be asking here are: - who benefits from casting any averted disaster, in hindsight, as an "overblown panic"? - who benefits from obfuscating the role of MILLIONS of person-hours of labor in averting a disaster?

The Y2K crisis ABSOLUTELY IS a great parallel to the climate crisis! Just not in the way the author of that editorial WANTS it to be!

This is also true. Foot-dragging and outright denial by management and C-suite were major contributory factors to the problem. (Just like climate change!!!!)https://twitter.com/lewbloch/status/1211148928629919745 …

The REAL lesson you should be learning from Y2K is that even genuine goddamn catastrophes can be averted and/or mitigated if people actually have the will and the skill to PUT IN THE GODDAMN WORK.

People have been asking so I've gone hunting for some resources to share. Unfortunately so much of the narrative was "hoax", right from the start, that it's infuriatingly difficult to find anything useful, but here are a few things:

The citations on this list are mostly dead, but Wayback will probably resurrect at least some of them. This is a list of failures that DID ACTUALLY HAPPEN, either live or in real-world-conditions testing. Most are minor. Some are not. http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000RSP …

I haven't watched this video yet but skimming the transcript, it seems to be a pretty good retrospective. It points out that there are STILL major single points of failure that could cause catastrophes. https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/what-really-happened-in-y2k …

Here's some oral history collected just the other day by Popular Mechanics. https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/security/a30338692/y2k-panic/ … (There's also a lot of oral history happening in my thread!)

Also, while it's customary to put one's Soundcloud or equiv in a viral thread, i had heretofore NOT been plugging anything. However, we just now got news that we will have to travel for a family emergency, & we NEED new tires. So https://cash.app/$AdrienneLeigh if you want to help out!

(Our current tires aren't actually legal (or entirely safe) to travel on in the winter where we are, and while we get away with it inside city/suburb limits, my spouse's folks live up an actual mountain so that won't fly.)

OH LOOK. Those "fake news" bugs? STILL EXIST in some cases and they're causing problems NOW. ("Windowing" like this was a common way to fix the 2-digit issue in some of the oldest systems.)https://twitter.com/jef_poskanzer/status/1213258774938415104 …
